Brahms - Ein Deutsches Requiem; Haydn - Insanae et vanae curae; Schubert - Unfinished Symphony

Haydn - Insanae et vanae curae

Haydn’s motet Insanae et vanae curae - frenzied and vain cares - is Southampton Philharmonic Choir’s short contribution to the 200th anniversary of Haydn’s death. It is one of Haydn’s most powerful pieces, being adapted from the storm chorus of an existing oratorio.

Schubert - Unfinished Symphony

Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony (or Symphony No 8 in B minor) will give our professional orchestra, the New London Sinfonia, a chance to shine. The piece has strongly contrasting sections - sometimes soft and lyrical, sometimes fierce and turbulent.

Brahms - Ein deutsches Requiem

Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem, the main work in this concert, was described by the composer as a “human requiem” of mourning and consolation for the living. The German text was chosen by Brahms from the Lutheran Bible. The work was the composer’s response to the death of his mother and perhaps also to the death some years earlier of his great friend and mentor, Schumann. The music ranges from sad and reflective to triumphant.
