Southampton Philharmonic Choir presents a vibrant celebration of the operatic stage in an evening rich in drama, lyricism and choral power.
Conducted by Rory Macdonald, a musician whose international career has been shaped in the world’s leading opera houses, A Night at the Opera brings together some of the most compelling moments written for chorus and solo voice. The choir is joined by the London-based Docklands Sinfonia, whose energy and responsiveness make it an ideal partner for this operatic programme.
From the stirring nobility of Verdi’s Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves to the festive brilliance of Wagner’s Die Meistersinger, the programme showcases opera’s great composers at their most direct and dramatic.
Outstanding soloists Anita Watson (soprano) and Jay Broadhurst (tenor) join the choir for much-loved arias including Puccini’s triumphant Nessun dorma, Dvořák’s luminous Song to the Moon, and the deeply moving Lensky aria from Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. Dramatic ensemble scenes from Otello, Macbeth, La Traviata and I Pagliacci complete an evening of powerful storytelling through music.
Whether you are an opera devotee or discovering it for the first time, this concert promises an evening of colour, contrast and thrilling choral sound at the O2 Guildhall Southampton.
