James Atkins — Assistant Accompanist/Musical Director

News

James is a familiar face in the choir, having started out in SUPhil, before “graduating” to SPC several years ago. A committed and enthusiastic conductor, accompanist, arranger and performer, James is known for his high musical standards, balanced with a friendly, supportive approach. His excellent work with the choir over recent months has made him an ideal fit for the newly-created role of Assistant Accompanist/Musical Director.

James has served on the SPC committee since 2023, assisting with rehearsals, and advising on repertoire. He has deputised as accompanist or conductor at rehearsals and events – including the 2024 Associated British Ports Carol Service, attended by over 500 people.

James is also the Founder and Musical Director of Clara Voces Chamber Choir, a project-based ensemble established in 2024 to present vibrant, high-quality classical performances to new audiences. The choir’s debut concert at the Royal Victoria Chapel drew a full audience and enthusiastic praise, followed by a warmly received performance of Fauré’s Requiem at Southampton’s Music in the City 2025 festival. Future engagements include the Lord Mayor of Southampton’s Christmas Carol Concert and a return to Royal Victoria Chapel in autumn 2026.

James’s wider musical experience includes directing the Southampton University Jazz Band, leading the Southampton University Singers as interim Musical Director, and conducting the Southampton University Concert Band. Alongside arranging and composing – his Choral Nocturnes won the Nicholas Thorpe Composition Award – he continues to develop ambitious musical projects. His energy, creativity, and commitment to choral music make him an exciting addition to SPC’s musical leadership, and we are so pleased to have him on the team.
